How To Play Roulette: Step-by-Step Guide to Roulette Rules

Roulette is one of the most played online casino games and is enjoyed by millions of gamblers from around the world. Players are drawn to the theatrics of the wheel (no cards in this game), the low house edge, and just how easy it is to start playing. In this guide, we are going to break down everything about this game including tips, how to play roulette, and roulette strategy. Let’s get started!

Types of live dealer roulette?

There are two main types of live roulette, European and American. Both of these versions are great fun to play but have subtle differences. To help you choose the right roulette game for you we are going to explore these two popular variates.

European Roulette Layout

European roulette is the most popular variation of the game in both online and land-based casinos. In this version of the game, players get to choose from numbers 1 to 36 like on a standard roulette wheel but there is only one zero which sits at the top of the wheel. Gamblers can wager on the zero but if players have bet on any other number or on red and black if the zero comes up all those bets lose. Players receive 35 to 1 odds for gambling on a single number but because of the zero, their true odds are actually 36 to 1. The inclusion of zero gives the house a 2.7% edge which means for every $100 you bet you are expected to lose $2.7.

French roulette also includes just one zero but has slightly different rules. In French roulette, if a player has made a 50/50 wager (red, black, odds, evens) and the number zero comes up they can either receive 50% of their stake back or they can be forced to make the same bet in the round and the result of that round will determine if they win or lose. This rule is great for players and provides tremendous value as it reduces the house’s edge.

American Roulette Layout

American roulette has one key difference to European roulette and that is the inclusion of an additional zero. While this may not seem like much it radically increases the house edge. If you bet on a single number to win when playing American roulette the house edge is 5.4% which is double what players receive when playing European roulette. Over your lifetime of play, you can expect to lose twice as much playing American roulette compared to the European roulette game.

How to play live roulette?

Live roulette is a very simple game to learn and the rules can be understood in a few minutes. This makes roulette the perfect game for beginner gamblers. To help you start playing this great we are going to explain in-depth the different live roulette rules.

The Wheel

Casino roulette features a wheel with numbers from 1 to 36, 1 or 2 zeroes (European vs American and an even number of black and red numbers. The dealer spins the wheel and places the ball on the turning wheel. According to live roulette rules once the ball lands on a particular number or color whoever bet on that outcome wins! If the ball lands on zero everything apart from those lucky gamblers who bet on zero loses.

The Table

Casino roulette doesn’t just feature a wheel but also a table. On the table, you will be presented with all of your betting options which include the 36 numbers, zero, red/black, and odd or even. Players must place their chips on the table on the particular wager they want to make before the wheel spins for the bet to be valid. When playing roulette online and offline you will play with the same table.

Bets

A great aspect of roulette is the variety of bets you can make which include betting on particular numbers, colors, or even the dreaded zero. With live roulette, the number of wager types is only limited by your imagination. A big part of roulette casino strategy is figuring which bet you are going to make but don’t worry we will share our free roulette strategy in a later section.

Inside Bets

Inside bets in roulette refer to numerous higher payout bets. The most common inside bets include:

  • Straight - Betting on a single number
  • Split - Gamble on neighboring numbers such as 7 and 8
  • Street - Bet on 3 consecutive numbers
  • First four - Wager on 0,1,2,3,4

These bets are riskier but gamblers are rewarded by receiving higher odds for example a straight wager pays out 35 to 1.

Outside Bets

Outside bets in live roulette refer to a range of different wagers which are characterized by their lower payouts but high probability (they are almost a coin flip). The most common outside bets include:

  • 1 to 18 - You win if the ball lands of any number between 1 to 18
  • 19 to 36 - Any number above 19 and you walk away with extra cash
  • Odds - Gamble on all odd numbers
  • Evens - You win if any even number shows up
  • Red or Black - You can bet on every number belonging to a certain color

You won’t get rich making outside bets while playing roulette online but you do give yourself a much higher chance of winning as these bets have the lowest house edge.

French Bets

There are 3 kinds of french bets that gamblers can make when playing roulette online. The French bets are:

  • Neighbor of zero - Bet on every number that is on either side of zero from 22 and 25 on the wheel. The numbers include 22, 18, 29, 7, 28, 12, 35, 3, 26, 0, 32, 15, 19, 4, 21, 2, 25.
  • 3rd of the wheel - Wager on all numbers opposite zero and cover ⅓ of the table. The numbers include 27, 13, 36, 11, 30, 8, 23, 10, 5, 24, 16, 33.
  • Orphans - Gamble on all numbers not included in the first two wagers which include 17, 34, 6 and 1, 20, 14, 31, 9.
